File Under: Snow? Seriously?
This morning I awoke to snow on the ground. No, I awoke to the sound of buzzing...my cell phone was on vibrate and it was ringing on the table in the hallway outside of my bedroom. By the time I got to it, I had missed a call from Dan. In the mean time, I looked out of my window. The blinds were open and all I saw was white. It had begun to snow overnight and was still snowing at 9:20 am. The ground was covered with about 2 inches of snow. It was wet and slushy so it wasn't going to survive very long but apparently it was enough to be a nuisance in traffic. Dan called me back, he was on his way to the gym and said that driving in it was a bit of a challenge. More for the bus that he saw skid into a bus stop than for him.
I had done everything I needed to do outside yesterday. No reason to leave the house, but at about 1 I decided the worst was over and I ventured out, Again, because of the wetness of the snow, it wasn't much of a challenge to clean. A few swipes and my car was clean, it just slid right off. Driving was fine. I made it to the gym without much delay. When I left, the sun was attempting to come out. By the time I got home, the sun was out and most of the sidewalks were clean.
My hope is that the tulips and crocuses (Joy, is that the proper plural for cruocus?) that are beginning to appear will survive the snow and still bloom in a couple weeks. It would be sad to lose them.
How's the weather where you live?

Time Release Boots
File Under: Wardrobe Malfunction
Last night I met my friends Robert and Maria, along with their sweethearts out for dinner. Robert, Maria and I used to work together, they left, I stayed and we've kept in touch. Our other friend Priscilla was not able to join us last night.
I knew I would be consuming alcoholic beverages so I did not drive. We had snow that day, so I put on my boots and left the house. Mind you, these are the same boots that I walked to and from work in that same day.
I got about half-way to the train station and my left boot felt funny, like something was stuck to the bottom of it and it was flopping. A few more steps and I suddenly stepped down father than usual. I looked back to see what had dislodged from my boot. Turns out it was the sole.
My boots were a pair of Timberlands that I bought about 8 years ago. I don't wear boots all the time, just when the snow is deep enough to warrant the wearing of said boots. I don't like the feeling of having something around my ankles. The remaining boot was completely sealed, there were no tears that exposed my foot, inside. I picked up the sole and kept walking. But then I had to decide if I should go back home and be late, or go to dinner with my modified boot. I decided to go on to dinner.
A few steps later, I decided I would stop at DSW on my way to dinner, buy a new pair of boots and then continue on. It definitely on my route to dinner, it just required a detour. I had about 20 minutes to make a purchase.
I got to the train, got on the train and then looked at my right boot. It was doing the same thing!!
I got off the train, with the sole from my left boot in hand and now with a floppy right sole. I got downstairs, reached down, tore off the second sole and kept walking.
I arrived at DSW at 7:05 pm, purchased a new pair of boots by 7:15, and was at the restaurant by 7:25. I was the last to arrive but given that our reservation was for 7:30, I was still early.
Am I the only one that something like that happens to? Have you had any articles of clothing self-destruct?

Today is April 28
File Under: Why?
It's the end of April. The polar ice caps are melting. Global warming is here. Why the fuck did it snow in Chicago today?

OVER IT!
File Under: How much more can I take?
I'm not a fan of winter but I tolerate it because it can be pretty and I live in what I consider to be a really amazing city so when it's not winter, Chicago is lots of fun. It's the midwest so we have seasons. Summers can be sizzling hot, winters can be cold and snowy. This one has been particularly cold and snowy. The past few winters have been relatively mild, and without a lot of snow. We've had more than our share of both extremes and I have to say that I AM OVER IT. When it snows, people are assholes when it comes to parking. They are inconsiderate about the space they leave between the car in front or behind them, thus hogging two spaces. People don't clean their sidewalks. I rent and I get out and shovel my sidewalk. It's not even my property. Another neighbor in the building shovels too but the rest of them do NOTHING. And let's not ignore the fact that it's fucking cold. Tonight's low is -2. When it's that cold, I just ache. I'm tired of being sore and cranky. I want it to end!!
Okay, enough ranting. I'm going to change out of my fleece hoodie and jeans and put on my flannel pajamas, then crawl into bed under 3 blankets.

Super Tuesday
File Under: VOTE!
Today is "Super Tuesday." 24 states are having primaries or caucuses to elect a Democrat and a Republican candidate for President of the United States. I was out the door at 6:45 this morning, casting my ballot for Hillary. While it's evident that Senator Obama will win in Illinois (he's already been projected as the winner), it was important to go and vote so that she would get a share of delegates. GO HILLARY!
In other "Super Tuesday" news, Chicago is under a Winter Storm Warning. Depending upon which forecaster one listens to, the city and surrounding areas to the north and west could be blanked under anywhere from 4 - 15 inches of snow. FUCK! My approach to weather is this; I listen to multiple forecasts and pick the one I like best. Tonight's winning forecast was told by Jerry Taft on Channel 7. His forecast sounded most favorable for the city, 4-5 inches. I can deal with 4-5 inches. I'm no size queen, I'm fine with an inch or less. Snow really hasn't begun falling as of this writing. I guess we'll just have to see how much is on the ground when I wake up tomorrow morning.
